Mikey B's Fall Movie Preview 2018

Well after not feeling particularly inspired by any of the recent releases, I decided this weeks Movie Night post is going to be something I have not done in a long time. Thats right ladies and gentleman, its time for "MikeyB's Fall Movie Preview"! What is that you may ask? It means that this post will consist of all the movies releasing in the next three months that I am personally excited for. So with that out of the way lets dive right in!

Release Date: September 14
Director: Shane Black
Starring: Boyd Holbrook, Olivia Munn, Sterling K. Brown, Yvonne Strahovski

Plot: The Predators are returning to earth and the only thing standing between them and us is a ragtag bunch of mercenaries.

Opinion: Even though the trailers don't instill a lot of confidence in me, the fact that Shane Black is handling writing and directing duties makes me cautiously optimistic. Add a hard R rating and a pretty fantastic cast to the mix and its not hard to look past the flaws in the trailers and get hyped regardless.

Release Date: September 21
Director: Eli Roth
Starring: Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, Kyle MacLachlan

Plot: After the unfortunate death of his parents, young Lewis Barnavelt is sent to live with his eccentric uncle Jonathan who just so happens to be a real live warlock.

Opinion: I grew up reading the works of John Bellairs on which this is based, so I've got high hopes for this one. Black and Blanchett are simply perfect for their respective roles and Eli Roth will be making his first family friendly directorial debut with subject matter that should fit right into his current adult wheelhouse.

Release Date: October 5
Director: Bradley Cooper
Starring: Bradley Cooper, Lady Gaga, Dave Chappelle

Plot: A older musician on the decline helps out an up and coming singer/actress.

Opinon: A remake of a remake of a 1937 classic and Bradly Cooper's directorial debut. That may not sound like something to be excited for but this musical/drama is getting insane buzz, and the trailer for it is one of the best I've seen all year. I really enjoyed Gaga in her American Horror Story: Hotel role so I can't wait to see her in a film that will marry her two talents together.

Release Date: October 12
Director: Damien Chazelle
Starring: Ryan Gosling, Claire Foy, Jason Clarke

Plot: A dramatized look at the life of Neil Armstrong, and the legendary nasa missions that would lead him to be the first man to walk on the moon.

Opinion: Gosling as Armstrong, Foy as his wife, and Damien Chazelle's first film since the brilliant La La Land? Honestly this movie has so much going for it how could you not be excited?

Release Date: October 12
Director: Drew Goddard
Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Jon Hamm, Dakota Johnson

Plot: A group of seven strangers, each with their own motives, all converge on the El Royale, a hotel on the border of California and Nevada.

Opinion: Writer/Director Goddard has already made one of my favorite horror films of all time with Cabin in the Woods, and "El Royale" seems to build on the same themes exhibited in "Woods" with a strange location where everything is definitely not what it seems.

Release Date: October 19
Director: David Gordon Green
Starring: Judy Greer, Jamie Lee Curtis, Virgina Gardner

Plot: It's been forty years since Laurie Strode survived the horrible murders committed by Michael Myers, and has been preparing for his return ever since.

Opinion: Disregarding every sequel released since the '79 original film, this film has a strange but promising pedigree. Co-written by comedy actor Danny McBride, and directed by mostly serious film-maker David Gordon Green, this "first" sequel has lots of interesting ideas and is one of my most anticipated films of the year.

Release Date: November 9
Director: Julius Avery
Starring: Wyatt Russell, Pilou Asbaek, Bokeem Woodbine

Plot: A group of American soldiers behind enemy lines on D-Day stumble upon a horrific Nazi experiment.

Opinion: This "totally not an entry into the Cloverfield universe" came out of nowhere with a great trailer and a fresh take on WWII. Fingers crossed that the full film is as good as the trailer.

Release Date: November 16
Director: David Yates
Starring: Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Paterson, Dan Fogler

Plot: The second installment of the prequel series set in the Harry Potter universe.

Opinion: I absolutely loved the first film in this new series so I have very high hopes for this sequel.

Release Date: November 21
Director: Steven Caple Jr.
Starring: Michael B. Jordan, Tessa Thompson, Sylvester Stallone

Plot: Now a successful boxing champion, Adonis Creed decides to take on the son of famed Russian boxing legend Ivan Drago.

Opinion: Yet another sequel to a film I adored, and yes my hopes are just as high.

Well that wraps up my top picks for the new films coming this fall! Anything I missed hat you're excited for? Please feel free to let me know in the comments and as always thanks for reading!

  1. I'm not sure when it comes out, but without a doubt the best film of the year, or next year, is sure to be the Steven Universe film. Get ready Oscars, Stevens gonna win every award!
