MikeyB's Monthly Movie Roundup: August (2018)

It is time yet again for another one of my patented "Monthly Movie Roundups"! I only was able to see two of the new releases this past August and both were of questionable quality. Though I still managed to have a lot of fun with one of the movies regardless. Which one you may ask? Well lets dive right in and find out!

Released: August 10 2018
Director: Jon Turtletaub
Starring: Jason Statham, Bingbing Li, Rainn Wilson

Plot: A team working at a state of the art underwater facility off of the coast of China accidentally unleashes a super predator not seen since the age of dinosaurs: a Megalodon.

Opinon: Stupid, nonsensical, loud, flashy, stupid, some horrible performances, token cute kid, and did I mention stupid?. The kicker is though that I had a lot of fun. The premise is absolutely ridiculous but the movie knows that and embraces it. Honestly the only thing you have to ask yourself to find out if you want to see this is: "Do I want to see Jason Statham punch a giant shark in the face?" I think we both know the answer to that one.

Released: August 17 2018
Director: Peter Berg
Starring: Mark Wahlburg, Lauren Cohan, Iko Uwais

Plot: An elite special forces team in south east asia must extract a mysterious man who has information that could prevent a terror attack on U.S. soil.

Opinion: I went into this one with some rather high hopes. Berg has already proven himself as a competent and exciting action director with "The Kingdom" and "Lone Survivor" so this should have been an easy home run. It is not. Im not sure what happened here but it feels like a season of a T.V. series that was crammed into one film. The action scenes are certainly thrilling but it is all lost in a story that is way too rushed and an ending that offers no resolution.

Well that concludes my "Roundup" of the new releases I saw this past August. Did you see anything I didn't? Differing opinion then me? Please feel free to let me know in the comments below, and as always thank you for reading and I'll see you next time!
