As I mentioned at the end of last week's "Horror Movie Marathon" I was out of town for a few days and I just couldn't find the time to watch any horror movies. So I figured since this weekend is the one right before Halloween and people might want some suggestions for scary movies to watch, I would offer up my opinions on the selection of the worlds favorite streaming service: Netflix! I'm going to pick one movie from five of the various sub-genre's that Netflix lists so there will be a good mix for whatever you might be in the mood for. So without further explanation lets dive right in!
Tucker & Dale vs. Evil (2010)
Sub-genre: Horror Comedy
Director: Eli Craig
Starring: Tyler Labine, Alan Tudyk, Katrina Bowden
You may have noticed I did not include a trailer with my usual info up above because honestly the less you know about this one, the better. Its about two "good ole' boys" who encounter a group of partying teens at their cabin in the woods and...thats all you need to know.
Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994)
Sub-genre: Slashers and Serial Killer Movies
Director: Wes Craven
Starring: Heather Langenkamp, Robert Englund, Miko Hughes
The seventh and, in my opinion, best film in the "Nightmare on Elm Street" series of films. This time around Freddy Krueger has entered into the real world and begun terrorizing the stars of his film franchise. Whip smart and actually scary this film is a fantastic precursor to "Scream" which used a similar "meta" approach to the genre.
Troll Hunter (2010)
Sub-genre: Monster Movies
Director: Andre Ovredal
Starring: Otto Jespersen, Robert Stoltenberg, Knut Naerum
A group of college kids are investigating what they believe to be a bear poacher but, it turns out he hunts something far more dangerous. Featuring fantastic special effects and creature design, this Norwegian gem is one of the best "found footage" horror films ever made.
Sleepy Hollow (1999)
Sub-genre: Supernatural Horror Movies
Director: Tim Burton
Starring: Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci, Miranda Richardson
In turn of the century america Detective Ichabod Crane is sent to upstate New York to investigate a series of murders allegedly committed by a supernatural being in the small town of Sleepy Hollow. Burton pays homage to "Hammer Studio" horror films of the past and delivers one of the best horror films of the 90's and, honestly one of the best of his career.
Hellraiser (1987)
Sub-genre: Satanic Stories
Director: Clive Barker
Starring: Andrew Robinson, Clare Higgins, Ashley Laurence
Clive Barker's directorial debut adapts his own novella "The Hellbound Heart" to the big screen and introduces one of the Horror genre's most iconic villains: Pinhead. A splatter classic, this movie still holds up today. If only you could same the same for its numerous terrible sequels.
Okay so that wraps up my suggestions for your Halloween Weekend! Hope you have fun, stay safe, and please let me know if you watch anything I suggested and what you thought of it.
